The
Flag has been an iconic image in the Jasper Johns
Paintings, Prints, Works on Paper and Lead Reliefs since 1954-55,
when the Artist created Flag,
now in the Museum of Modern Art Collection. Mr.
Johns has acknowledged his Art incorporates "things the
mind already knows," like the utterly familiar American
Flag.
Since the mid-1950s the Flag has appeared in approximately
30 paintings, 14 prints, and 50 drawings. In addition to single
Flags, Johns has created Flags within larger fields, multiple
Flags and backward or vertical Flags.
Of the 14 Prints, the red-white-blue Flag
is a dominant image in 5 prints: Flags I,
1973, published by Simca; Two Flags (Whitney
Anniversary), 1980, published by Gemini; Flag
On Orange, 1998 and Flag and Vase,
2001, a smaller version of Untitled, 2000,
published by Low Road Studio.
Jasper Johns, Untitled, 2000, incorporates
the Artist's iconic red-white-blue Flag in a Color Linocut
of only 38 impressions with 6 Artist's Proofs. Three of the
Artist's top ten Painting auction records incorporate the
Flag; since 1988, Flags I, 1973,
has consistently ranked as the Artist's most expensive single
Print.
Other
examples of Jasper Johns Untitled, 2000
are included in prestigious Museum Collections: The Metropolitan
Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art; The Walker Art Center;
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The National Gallery
of Art. |
