The daughter of Tony Smith, the renowned Sculptor of Abstract Art, Kiki Smith has been creating Art full time since her Father died in 1980. As a demonstration of Kiki Smith's talent, her 2006 mid-career Whitney Museum Exhibition included several of the Artist's 1980 Works, created when she was still a teenager.
Kiki Smith is best known Internationally for her exploration of Art that presents a dialogue of the human body as a receptacle. In Mushroom Head, 1995, a Unique Bronze Sculpture created with Phosphorus Bronze and White Bronze Kiki Smith turns the figure inside out, alluding to death and resurrection. By combining Phosphorus Bronze with the lighter White Bronze of the Mushrooms, Kiki Smith presents the paradox of decay and regeneration.
Like her Father, Kiki Smith has been the recipient of many Awards, including the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture in 2000; the Athena Award for Excellence in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design; the 50th Edward MacDowell Medal from the MacDowell Colony.
Exhibited Internationally, Smith has already received several mid career retrospectives, including a 2009 Exhibition at the The Joan Miró Foundation and a 2007 Exhibition at the Whitney Museum, New York and a 2003 Exhibition of Prints & Multiples at The Museum of Modern Art.
