Considered one of the founders of the Op Art movement, Richard Anuszkiewicz studied with Josef Albers while at the Yale University School of Art. Similar to Albers, much of Richard Anuszkiewicz best Work comprises a visual investigation of formal structure and color effects, usually in a grid formation.
In 1963, Richard Anuszkiewicz stated "My work is of an experimental nature and has centered on an investigation into the effects of complementary colors of full intensity when juxtaposed and the optical changes that occur as a result, and a study of the dynamic effect of the whole under changing conditions of light, and the effect of light on color." In Red and Blue Portal, a 1971 Op Art Painting, Richard Anuszkiewicz explores the use of a red and blue optical color, squares and lines in an iconic rectangular grid.
