Thomas Ruff uses digital technologies to realize new pictorial possibilities of photography and re-examine its artistic potential.
"I don't believe in the Psychologizing portrait photography that my colleagues do, trying to capture the character with a lot of light and shade, ...That's absolutely suspect to me. I can only show the surface. Whatever goes beyond that is more or less chance."
Appropriation and manipulation are of recurring interest to Ruff, he explores these ideas in "Nudes" (2003), a photographic collection of blurred and enlarged images of pornographic photographs taken from the internet, and has produced a series based on the architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (L.M.V.D.R.).
